Photo London 2016

Postby GrahamL » Thu 19 May 2016, 23:37

A big exhibition of photographic images hosted by a number of international photo-art galleries opened today at Somerset House (see http://photolondon.org/), I spent almost the whole afternoon going round it. It is the first time I've been to this annual exhibition, it is enormous. Uses parts of Somerset House I didn't know existed.

I highly recommend a visit. While it is not the cheapest of photo exhibitions to view, it does have many famous images, and a lot of fascinating/intriguing contemporary images that may inspire. I personally found the Don McCullin exhibition in the Mezzanine area, the 'Gathered Leaves' panel by Alec Soth and the Leica sponsored image room very impressive.

There is a lot to see, the 3 dimensional constructions by the Columbian photographer-sculptress Leyle Gardenas (Gallerie Dix 9) and those by Liu Wen and Yoram Roth (Camera Work Gallery) question whether photography has to be simply portrayed in just two dimensions. A number of different approaches can be seen in other spaces too. The complex montages assembled by Sohie Nishino that are shown in the Michael Hoppen gallery space are particularly worth a look; 'Havana 2016' has to be seen in the flesh. I could go on, there is a lot more...

The exhibition runs until Sunday, it's likely to be pretty busy but it does cover a vast area. There are also a lot of books on offer throughout the exhibition including a number of book signings.

But do allow lots of time if you do go.

Cheers,

Graham L
